I met Kenny when he played at Simply Divine in Oak Ridge and I was a server there. That was in 1995 and we remained friends all these years. Even though I never really spent a lot of time with him, every time I would see him he treated me like I was one of his best friends. The last time I saw him was about three years ago when he played at our company gathering. We promised to get together and visit, but never did. I hate that! But, I know I will see him again one day and I look forward to that! I will miss Kenny!

Kenny, I didn't know when you didn't respond to my text that you had already left for heaven. Grateful for our recent recording sessions, lunches, laughs and sharing memories of playing music at Deanne Hill Country Club with the late Fayte Rutherford,Lance Owens and Luke Brandon. Thankful to have you playing on my Christmas CD you did for me in 2019.Look forward to looking for you in heaven with our Saviour, my friend. It is much sooner than we imagine. You were a dear friend and brother.

Years ago I asked a music store to recommend a guitar teacher for my son. They told me Kenny James was the best, and he was. That began a friendship that lasted through the years. Kenny taught my son and daughter to play guitar and taught me to be a better bass player. He was patient and kind to all he met, and loved his students. I looked forward to every lesson for the time to talk with Kenny and reminisce about mutual friends and venues we had been to. I am sad to hear of his passing, but you know there is some great music being played in heaven right now. Rest in peace until we meet again my old friend.

I met Kenny several years ago at Ciderville Music, a few years later I became a student of his. I always enjoyed his teaching guitar, and other wisdom he would give. He encouraged my love of jazz. I only took lessons from him for a couple of years, but we became friends (as did anyone who met Kenny), and we would keep in touch and occasionally meet to get a burger, have coffee, listen to music, and of course, do some picking. He was a kind spirit, and you always went away feeling wiser and better to have been with him. Everyone knew his skill as a guitar player and teacher, but Kenny was always modest about his abilities. I last saw him a couple months back when we got together at his home one Sunday morning with coffee, music, and reminisced about time, and picked. I was glad to be able to tell him I loved him, and I know he's with the Lord and his family gone before him. Kenny was that rare person who made the world a better place. He will be much missed.

I was Lucky enough to take Lessons from Kenny for awhile. He was a magnificent teacher. Patient, helpful, stern. He insisted that I re-learn my picking directions properly from the bad habits I had developed on my own. He assured me there was a reason why it had to be that way. Just trust him. Sure enough he was correct and I play much better now. He was also a good friend. I felt like half my lesson was playing and the other half a therapy session. Kenny was a great listener and usually had some good advice if you seeked it. He was an incredible player. Very humble about his skills. He once told me on his tombstone he wanted “ he was a guitar player”. He said I don’t want it to say great or whatever, just that I played guitar. He has taught so many in this community it will definitely leave a big void. I hope someone carries the torch that Kenny held so high for so long. He will be missed and I probably won’t ever pick up a guitar that i don’t think about him. God’s speed Kenny

Kenny played my daughters wedding a few years back, he was such a pro! She didn't even pick out music, we knew Kenny's level of playing. We set him up and he simply played. Every note he touched was from the soul, and it was beautiful. When the preacher took the podium you would have thought it had been rehearsed(I guess it really was) the song perfectly without rush ended as if it was the final part of it. Kenny was a pro! He taught many people that I know how to play and he will always be remembered among local players and me. He was a kind fun loving man that always brought a smile where ever he was. I had the pleasure of helping him get his tone right on his amps and Im proud to say he was my friend. You will be missed Kenny James, when he called me and I would look at the caller ID , I would always answer: "Ladies and Gentlemen, the legendary Kenny James" and we would laugh about it, but in truth he was legendary!

Kenny played lead guitar for my dad, Jim Fagan, during his younger years. In fact, I believe Kenny was in high school when he started. Their band played together for many years. Kenny was always good to me and he taught my son Dusty how to play as well. Dad said Kenny was good enough to play with any band in Nashville and that was evident if you ever had the pleasure of hearing him. My dad loved Kenny so much that I had Kenny play "Amaze in Grace" instrumental at his funeral in 1984. I'm certain my dad is welcoming Kenny back to the band in heaven and they are pickin and grinnin with huge smiles on their faces. God Bless Kenny James, God Bless his family..... and God Bless all that knew and loved him.
